As I said a few pages back now, Fallout 3 and 4 are enjoyable for their own specific reasons, even if they have giant failings from a true RPG perspective.

I don't think most players would agree that the newer Elder Scrolls games or Fallout 4 are shallow sellout games, but plenty of older gamers that fancy themselves purists shake their fists at the new stuff and assert that the games they grew up with were so much better. It's like with anything, newer music, newer movies, etc. Many people, especially passionate fans, just can't handle change as years go by, and if they're told that, would just respond that what they're complaining about is all bad change because they say so.

I know Astral has said that he enjoys the new games. I'm not accusing anyone in this thread of all that, just got me thinking.

Alright I mean I'm an advocate for all these games here, but this isn't true at all. Change is not a bad thing. Bad change is a bad thing. Watch the video I posted about Fallout 3 if you want to understand to view of why someone would be extremely disappointed with Fallout 3 as opposed to the old ones, and why they love New Vegas over the old ones.

Even from the mindset of a new gamer, there are still about 80,000 legitimate reasons to despise all Bethesda games.

"I don't think most players would agree that the newer Elder Scrolls games or Fallout 4 are shallow sellout games"

because most of the people who play new bethesda games tend to be young, having cut their teeth on gaming at the x360 generation or newer, and generally inexperienced with rpgs. NOT JUDGING, JUST STATING FACTS. the biggest reason why oblivion, dragon age, fable, mass effect were so wildly successful was because they brought the rpg back to the west and made it accessible for the new generations of console players. some of them were better games than the others, but all of them made bank as a result of this simple trend

"plenty of older gamers that fancy themselves purists shake their fists at the new stuff and assert that the games they grew up with were so much better."

i love a shit ton of new games and would even give some o them an earnest 10/10, but the western AAA industry has grown very cancerous over the last decade or so and there arent that many counter-examples. (but there are some)

"It's like with anything, newer music, newer movies, etc. "

except those are a lot more subjective as media than games are. games CAN have crippling objective flaws that fanboys just dismiss blindly. that's why websites like gamefaqs and neogaf are virulent cesspits, exactly because they foster that kind of behaviour from their inhabitants. not to mention corporate apologia is far more common in the games community than in music or film. also, platform tribalism

"Many people, especially passionate fans, just can't handle change as years go by"

again, not the case here. i still play and love a lot of new games

New Vegas was the latest Fallout until 4, so that wouldn't count as an old game. Like I said I'm not saying either of you are like that. I haven't played Fallout 1 or 2 so I can't speak to those, maybe they are the best Fallouts, I have no idea. If they're on Steam I'll probably get them soon.

Also you can't say I'm wrong about people not being able to handle change, it's naive to think everyone is so open-minded about new installments of a series or band they like. Just look at the reaction to the latest Star Wars movie, even though for the most part it was great *braces for barrage of insults from Star Wars fans*

"Change is not a bad thing. Bad change is a bad thing." Agreed.

in general? ur right

in gaming? ur kinda right, but gaming is still just plain worse than other media in this regard

then again, the internet worships the n64 and its games that run like shit and look much worse than pc games of the same time, so maybe ur fully right LOL.

"Just look at the reaction to the latest Star Wars movie"

havent seen it yet

Maybe it's mainly people on the Internet who can't handle change, it can be a very toxic place and people set too high expectations for things they want. Most normal peolpe just mildly enjoy the new Avengers movie for example then move on with their life. The video game community is very judgy though, maybe justifiably in some cases like with how the new Battlefront had so little content in the main game.

Re-release?

There's an enhanced edition on GOG, I have that one and the original.

Then there's the spiritual successor Torment: Tides of Numenera that I haven't played yet but I've heard a lot of mixed things. It's on my list to play soon.

Is there another re-release of Planescape that I haven't heard of?

"The video game community is very judgy though"

again, be that as it may, the video game community also has BY FAR the most corporate apologia and self-destructive defending of awful business practices

and thats aside from how large publishers force good studios to neuter their work into bland grey indistinct sausages

The modern AAA game industry is fucking cancer from an objective standpoint though. I am sick to fucking death of microtransactions, lootboxes, online-only, DRM, etc. all this bullshit that just waters down games and holds back content and experiences because they want to own you and all your fucking money.

I actually felt like it was worth noting to somebody when recommending Mario Odyssey that you could unlock all the costumes IN GAME for FREE.

Nah, last year it was proved that differences actually could be made when people pushed back against EA's fucking sickening business practices.

And developers like CD Projekt Red are proving that the AAA industry isn't all bad, and can be consumer-friendly again
