hmmm, not loving this on first listen

as speedy and noisy and dweedly as this is, a lot of the guitarwork feels really flat and uninteresting. and the electronic bursts aren't that great either

Not sure what you mean by 'guitarwork'; this one is far more about layerings than notes or riffs, much more wall-of-sound and less fiddly than anything else they've done. One of my less favourite of their good albums for mainly that reason, but they way they build that aesthetic is as livewire as it comes

that's what I mean, I find the layering of the weedly guitar parts and what have you ineffective bc it kinda felt unengaging after a while, which is the very opposite intention of music like this. it wasn't "predictable" per say but after establishing their sound on the first track I didn't find much that happened after throwing me for a loop which left me disappointed ig

Well this album is mainly about maintaining energy across a slick writing and production style. I don't think it makes much sense to pin novelty or erratic elements onto its "intention"; if there was any Point to this record, it was probably to reinvent the band as a duo in a way they they could translate live without restaging their old setup. It's probably better to think of it as a hi-tech punk jam than anything else; they did shock value and bemusement to death for a straight decade before this and it suits them to have a slicker sound
But there are also many reasons why Cell-Scape, Charlie and maybe Bambi's Dilemma on a zany day are better albums, and the relative narrowness of this onesoscooe is defs one so

Well, you would never say that Albini had nothing to do with the Jesus Lizard beyond producing them so I'm not sure that stands lol?
Am too close to having to sleep to jam anything new ugh
