The progression and variation of the themes on the first disc is actually interesting and coherent, I'm just realizing that now

Yeah disc 1 is a very good listen as a whole. Disc 2 is enjoyable too.

Disc 1 is one long song basically so yea it's definitely pretty coherent.

DT's Six Degrees was supposed to be one very long song as well, and it's barely coherent within itself. I know the intentions were completely different, but the result here just makes much more sense. I think the key here was to not have a unifying theme, but simply loose a variations of a few recurring motifs

This was an interesting release for sure, would be very curious to see where the band would've gone from here.

I really do hope they make one more album at the very least. Sad to think that this could be the end of them

Steve pretty much confirmed this is definitely it for them. He expressed literally no interest with coming back to PT. He's enjoying his solo career too much to come back.

Coming back to PT, stylistically, wouldn't be coherent with how his music has evolved in the past few years

His solo albums evolved from this anyway. Insurgentes was released before this, but he was working on both albums, and others, at once. The experimental industrial/electronic and alternative influences on here evolved into Insurgentes, which expanded further into his following releases in other ways. I'm just grateful his solo stuff exists, since it's the obvious evolution from this anyway, even if it's not labeled Porcupine Tree.

He's clearly happy and passionate about his work he's doing now so that's awesome. He's still pouring out great ideas, better than this.

Agreed Mong, and seeing him live a few months ago definitely made me realize that even more.
