The Doorway is one of the best opening riffs I've ever heard!

Relatively new to this band, are those bagpipes the real deal or is it some sort of keyboard/emulation?
|
| |
They’re real and done by John Goff

Aye, great album in general but Descent is almost like the highlight on it.

The 'chorus' riff on the T/T is so apocalyptic and anxiety inducing it's glorious

Perfect to listen to in the countryside while witnessing a sunset. Still this is my least favorite from their glorious era (from Souls at Zero to Given to the Rising), yet a marvelous album anyway, these guys are too good

This album gains lots of dimension with Tribes of Neurot's Grace man. How had I not listened to both albums together before? Critical mistake

yep its one of neurosis' most bare-bones and by-the-numbers albums without it.

Agreed, it's meant to be listened together for a reason

yes and not really
they just had the ingenious idea of layering their record with their ambient project’s touch, an amazing effort done only cuz TSIB had shitload of layering but that wasn’t Albini’s or the band’s sense to approach ToG
anything else is cute speculation

@Flug @Fros15 Agreed. It's probably still my least favorite of the Albini albums (though sometimes I prefer it to Honor) and it took ages for me to finally appreciate it but it is still an excellent album. I enjoy this more if I pop it randomly without listening any of the following or previous albums, including Sovereign which I think is superior.

correct opinion. its slightly bland in the context of their surrounding albums but if you pop it on after listening to any other band its gonna feel special lol
|

Exactly haha
The title track is massive, though. Probably one of my favorite songs from them.
