I did initially wonder but I saw your soundoff just a bit ago and thought that explained it

In regards to the wikipedia article on "Bass Music", that quote from Skream which I think was probably (way too) influential in making people call a lot of music that:

"The word dubstep is being used by a lot of people and there were a lot of people being tagged with the dubstep brush. They don't want to be tagged with it and shouldn't be tagged with it - that's not what they're pushing... When I say 'UK bass', it's what everyone UK is associated with so it would be a lot easier if it was called that."

It really doesn't matter what people are "pushing" or what they want to be tagged with. Blawan has said pretty much the same thing in interviews regarding, I would guess, the labelling of his fram/iddy release as dubstep. I think a lot of it is an opposition to being labelled with the same genre tag as brostep artists.

There was a big long debate in one of the Kidcrash reviews where the drummer buster didn't like being labelled screamo and just kept going on and on about how they shouldn't be labelled that because HE didn't like being pinned down to that genre when they had influences from other ones and apparently "screamo" didn't exemplify that, but long story short that's the genre the band fit into best so it really doesn't matter whether he or blawan or skream wants to be labelled a certain thing. And with a few exceptions, usually the person making the music should have the least say in what their music is labelled as, because they have the most bias for wanting to be called something they aren't.

The Skream quote was in reference to artists being labelled as dubstep when they clearly weren't. It wasn't a "don't associate us with that" kind of thing, just that they clearly weren't making dubstep

the article cleared some things up for me actually (don't worry, I used my critical wiki-reading glasses)

i just flat-out completely misunderstood a genre term. so it goes right? there's a learning curve!

"Not really, Skrillex pioneered everything"

perfect response.

but dev would you still think it's safe to categorize this (broadly) as a bass music album? (assuming you have heard it)

I just personally don't like the term "bass music", but yeah it incorporates all aspects of the "sound" (I haven't heard it yet though, but yeah dubstep and such)

@dev, regarding your reply about the skream quote:

Specifically what? Maybe I'm wrongly associating his quote with stuff I've heard otherwise (like from blawan), but I do think that idea of calling something bass music because it doesn't fit into dubstep is still wrong because there's always at least a genre it fits into better (garage, house, etc.), where bass music is just a very unhelpful blanket term. I also think that saying someone shouldn't be called dubstep because that's not "what they're pushing" or what they "want to be tagged with" is wrong. Which isn't necessarily contradictory to what you're saying, just an elaboration on my initial point even if I'm wrong in analysing Skream's intentions.

Here's the Blawan interview I'm talking about by the way. He calls it kind of annoying (being labelled dubstep) and claims he never intended to be part of the "whole dubstep thing". I just think it's irrelevant what the producer wants to be part of. Either they are or they aren't it, whether they want to be or not.:

" I can't define that for shit and I have an electronic album I want to review, but I have no idea about electronic genres, so I'm gonna have to work my way around it"

it's not an issue as long as you don't try to represent more knowledge than you actually have. just try to avoid talking about genres, and talk about the albums textures and grooves.

that was my main problem with Insurrection's Skrillex review, which I thoroughly critiqued. I wasn't trying to tell him that he shouldn't be "allowed" to review electronic music without an in-depth knowledge of it, but that he should avoid tempting readers to call him on incorrect terminology.
