I get what you mean but some type of order is needed in order to be able to archive all the music that there's out there, there's way too much shit out there to leave everything as vague as "just music" or just "metal/punk/hip hop/whatever".
Yeah ok it's misused; it happens, people misinterpret words all the time. Still doesn't change the fact that without the labels finding music would be way too fucking hard

Subgenres could serve a small purpose I guess. But the problem with them is that most people take them way too seriously and keep themselves away from music they could easily enjoy just because of a stigma that comes from a stupid label somebody has put on that music.
I know, I didn't word that very good.
The few record/cd stores that are still around have gone this long with generic genres. Thats all thats needed imo. In short, subgenres are gay.
