this is quite excellent. but god damn, why in the hell did he decide not to include the kind of thumping percussion that would have transformed black orchid from a really good track to a phenomenal one? anticipation turns to disappointment, a synth line that good feels almost wasted without a drum beat.

Black orchid is perfect as it is imo. To me, the anticipation is Alothea and Black Orchid is the payoff. He has plenty of 8-bit-like tracks that capitalize on a big thumping beats:

I think it would've sounded a bit out of place here. And I kind of think his restraint on this album is the difference between an incredible overall moody album vs. a less impressive but still great mix of tracks like on With Love.

See, I just feel like it ends up being a bit cock-tease. But fair call re: a banger like that being out of place given the relative restraint and less groove-orientated nature of this record compared to its predecessor. And wow those tracks bang hard. Guess I'll be checking out his ep's.
