Finally turning out to be a grower, though my slow reaction to this may be from lack of effort on my
part. The Plains / Bitter Dancer is great, very America like (band not place).

this is pretty bad, listening right now
|

this is really good if you don't like it you don't have a heart.
|
| |
its decent, i like their s/t a lot better though
|
| |
i prefer this. their self-titled has some spectacular moments that nothing on this album really touch but i think this is the better release overall.
|

I'm sort of in between. I like them both for different reasons. =/

I rarely listen to it all the way through, mostly just hear the songs when they come up on shuffle, so I'm still always loving that every time. Definitely avoiding overlistening to this one.

this has some good moments but I feel like if I ever listened to it all the way through I'd have to take meth to stay awake

An album where it has the art but lacks the actual artistic value, you have the nice folk-like lyrics that don't mean anything at all. The first few tracks of the album have quite a lot of nice hooks and licks, but the rest of the album sounds more like a band rehearsal of random compositions while Robin Pecknold tries to think up the most artsy lyrics on the spot and tries to make them roll off the tongue naturally. But if you've never experienced any folk music before you'll probably take this album as some sort of groundbreaking experience. The album does have a select few enjoyable tracks though, where there's an actual direction with the playing, these tracks include "Battery Kinzie", "Bedouin Dress", and "Lorelai" Mind you all these songs still have ridiculous lyrics, they all have extremely tasty melodies. Having stupid lyrics? I can forgive a band for that. Having no melody at all? Then that's a no-no.

I guess it's all in opinions. You're all allowed to enjoy it though. I preferred their self titled debut LP a little more. Oh well.

"Lyrics that don't mean anything at all"
Aren't all of these lyrics about serious personal issues or dreams in Robin Pecknold's life? Yep,
they are.
=P
The melodies being tasteless is your opinion but the lyrics are all pretty important to the singer,
especially the opening track. I guess you'd really need to know a bit about the creation of this
album
and the lead singer's place in it to know that though.
=)
I'm just saying; you can't call them out and say their is no meaning when the entire album has a
pretty clear theme.
Yes, they're all a bit abstract but if you have studied poetry before you'd grasp the metaphors when
they pop up. Like it's not as abstract as Bon Iver or The Tallest Man on Earth. The stories are
pretty clear.

I think it's just as pretentious as any piece of poetry that can be deciphered as anything the author and the reader/listener wants. It can mean many things because of such vague lyrics. But it might grow on me sometime soon, even though I've listened to it at least 5-6 times. This is still my opinion though, I know I can't change anyone's here. It's just my two cents.
|
| |
So almost all great poetry is pretentious? Do you not perhaps maybe think too much of your own
opinion, no? =P
Just out of interest; why do you find poetry pretentious?

Not all great poetry is pretentious, simplicity is the best kind of poetry in a lot of cases.
