as much as i love his style, i think in some points of this album the guitars dont quite match his frenetic approach. it can either (depending on my mood) make its seem like over-playing, or seem like hes the one keeping things interesting/evolving etc. i dont know, i just love the balance on EiF. really pumped to see what they do next though.

I understand what you're saying. The drums definitely lead the band and are the showcase. However, I did find the guitar approach to be refreshing. They could have followed your typical patterns of creativing common DM riffs. Rather, they opted for an atmospheric approach. This leaves the band with room to explore further atomospheric ideas which I'm excited to hear on future albums.

I don't really "get" the whole atmospheric, meandering death metal "thing," but I kinda like this. Gonna just keep listening to it until I start to like it more, I think.

as far as I know these guys are the only ones who actually play this style

there are others but this is a noticable mix between technical death metal with atmospheric sludge influence. these guys are influenced by Isis and it shows how they incorporate it with the death metal.

I'd almost call it more Neurosis-influenced than Isis-influenced. idk, the riffs themselves are more reminiscent of Isis but the overall atmosphere is much more dark and primal than anyone but Neurosis.

it's not like Isis weren't dark in the beginning, and yeah I get what you're saying but the darkness comes from the death metal. interviews say it was Isis anyway.
