I'd say they're pretty mainstream Dev... I've seen many facebook pages "Favorite Artists: Lil Wayne, Kid Cudi, Earl Sweatshirt..." which really surprised me at first but doesn't catch me off guard anymore.

The same could be said about GY!BE

deviant, when highschoolers are requesting yonkers on mainstream pop radio stations (it's happening down here) you know it's getting mainstream.

You mean the people they're targeting their music at are responding? Seriously, they're on their way to becoming mainstream, but they're not yet

EDIT: they're on mainstream hip-hop radio, they're discussed by 10th-graders everywhere in the same conversations
as Kanye and Lil Wayne, they were on Fallon and mainstream magazine covers... what's not mainstream about them
again?

What's a mainstream hip hop radio station, do they just play Usher or something? Yeah, they're on a hip hop radio station, that doesn't mean they've become known by the general public. Again, they're being discussed by a target audience, because they heard of them over the internet. I think the Fallon thing is a poor example, he's also had Destroyer, Glasser and Friendly Fires on there. And sure they've appeared on magazine covers (like I said they want to be mainstream) but they're not there yet

could just be a culture divide Deviant...
because this:

The same could be said about GY!BE

does not hold true at all in my experience.

I know this is personal experience obviously, but I'd generously estimate that maybe 5 of my 800 or so facebook friends are fans of GY!BE, whereas I see Tyler and the gang being hyped to no end by those who usually post videos on their walls of Wale and Kid Cudi. And I don't think GY!BE would have ever been on the cover of Billboard Magazine...

Then again, I suspect this is sort of a silly conversation... probably just a culture divide?

i think of "Mainstream" as when at school kids bring little docking stations and play them in the hall way nad the order of songs are

lil wayne, lollipop

wiz khalifa, roll up

Earl Sweatshirt, Earl

Tyga, ???

Tyler, the Creator, Yonkers
