no, actually I was expressing an opinion of the Emery album, hence the review. not quite sure what you're getting at... did you read the thing on the page before this? my intentions? Also, I love Davey but a bunch of his review is laughable.

1. It had a few '5' reviews, and another '4' one. I have a differing point of view that many on the site share, and I wanted to write a review to personify these feelings that many have. (probably biggest reason)
Just want to say that that is the same reason I wrote the CTTS one. And as for no Emery fans sticking up for this album, you've obviously never spent much time on Davey's thread.
What I was getting at, is that the review should be able to stand on its own. If there were no other reviews for this, then it would have been completely pointless and useless to anyone reading it.
| | | There are comments about how it sounds disjointed at times between the screaming and clean vocals, and they have trouble blending some of the aspects. But that’s the only points you make against the music. Granted this could be a huge issue but in my opinion that isn’t enough to call the music “putrid” or “their efforts failing miserably”. There were no direct comments about the skills of the musicians, no complaints about repetitive song structure, or anything musically pertinent other than “it doesn’t mesh well”.
Yes the music was touched upon. However I think when giving this low a review to a popular album the argument should be extremely well backed up, almost to the point of excessiveness. Also while you manage to admit that Cubside Goodbye and Butcher’s Mouth are tolerable, you still throw in a slight to the band for “watering it down”. This leads me to believe you wouldn’t be happy with anything they produce no matter the quality. This may be false and most likely is, however it seems to show you have a bias on this band on principle which reduces your credibility in my eyes.
Disclaimer* Emery is probably my favorite band for a number of reasons, and I love this album. But I’m trying to be unbias which probably isn’t possible if we’re being honest haha
| | | Emim: ATRU got 4 '1' reviews in one day hahahahaha, you can't be serious. and I'm talking about in this thread, and against my points. no, I haven't spent much time in Davey's thread, and when I've been there all I've seen is image spam.
also, you didn't reply to 90% of what I wrote out to you up there in the paragraph : (
| | | skitz:
thanks for the reply. basically, you understand that it's the nature of the music I have most of a problem with, rather than small, technical aspects, right? That being said, maybe Emery could have done something to make this tolerable, but the fact that they fail in making this enjoyable (due to the flow, the ENTIRE lack of variance [I mentioned that a few times, didn't I?], and basically the fact that it's dribble from the mouth of what once was a great genre because it dumbs it down etc etc I'm tired of writing that...) is why I have it a 'very poor' rating. Believe it or not, musicians can have skill, execute what they want to, and still come out with shit. I mean these guys obviously aren't incredibly skilled or anything but that's basically what I feel happens here.

Yeah, it got three "not real" reviews. I gave it a fair score as was balanced towards it, rather than giving a one just because I don't like it.
As for the Emery image spam, that is mostly gone but we went over every track ad nauseum.

Oh, I thought we went over all that in the shoutboxes, didn't we?

Just on some of the earlier comments about me not sounding nice & owning Eric... & whatever other crap; that was definitely not my intention. I was still just trying to get to the crux of why this review exists. I think Eric has justified it enough now... Whether everyone agrees or not.
I just hope that somehow Eric emerges an even better writer than he already is out of all of this. It's just a matter of filtering out the crap feedback from the constructive feedback. Unfortunately, that's easier said than done, as some of the positive stuff falls in both categories, as does some of the negative stuff.
| | | DaveyBoy: thanks, that's definitely one of the most reasonable things anyone's said in this thread, and I agree completely. There's definitely a bunch of good, constructive critiques and feedback to find here.

After reading the review a coupe times, I really don't know what's WRONG with the album. Take what's wrong with it, give a few examples, then move on to the next point of what's wrong. That's how simple it is to write this review, but you sort of just say how deplorable it is... then you say how deplorable it is. Your writing is excellent as always, but this review is just sort of.. hollow bashing. I know this has probably already been said but I didn't read through all the comments.
Anyhow, it was well written obviously, but it doesn't hit the marks it needs to, to justify the rating.

I don't feel well read enough or creative enough to produce my own reviews so I find it hard to critique someone else's work but personally I didn't find the namedropping in the review particularly elitist.
The way it was delivered kind of rubbed me up the wrong way, it was like just because I like this album doesn't mean I'm not familiar with at the drive in or glassjaw or whatever, but considering the review concentrated on where emery sat in terms of representing the genre in which they operate mentioning those bands was certainly relevant.
As for this album I thought it was really really good at first but the more I listen to it the more I feel Emery have fallen into the same trappings of most recent post-hardcore bands in that they mix clean vocals with screaming at a whim. I'm struggling to find the words to explain what I mean but it feels more like they're fitting the vocals to an expected structure, where as with glassjaw for example when palumbo screams you feel like he's doing it because he's feeling passionate about what he's saying not just because he wants to be in a post hardcore band.

Also, page 15 reminds me of the part in Mean Girls where they're all talking about the shit they've done and landing on the crowd of girls.

It's actually refreshing to see a bad review for this, but I feel 1.5 is going too far.
| | | @Slum: no I think I clearly state the negatives a few times (boring, lack of variance, watered-down, dumbed-down, lack of cohesion, etc.). sorry if people didn't get that.
anyway I guess this review was kinda a failure... in the sense that it really didn't stir any productive discussion about music at all really or make anybody think. oh well, it remains one of my favorites I've ever written... I think it's really strong (something I wouldn't say about many of mine), and I think it speaks very well for a select group of people... I'm just a little sad / disappointed in myself that it was too hostile I guess to be taken seriously by the rest of the users. Yes, there were some little holes if you misinterpreted things (my fault)... but I still like it and stand by what I said, to be honest.
