Not sure what triggered it, but this weekend I started on a Mazzy Star binge. Other than the Dwight Yoakam tracks I listened to this afternoon, I've just been listening to Mazzy Star.
I remember the whole Paisley Underground thing in LA in the mid-80's. I was not a part of it, but would read about it on occasion in the Times and in some 'zines I'd buy when I went to Rhino Records (either in Claremont or Montclair). I was not a big fan of that scene, either, but I did like the Bangles (pre-Walk Like An Egyptian) and Opal.
I remember hearing Mazzy's "Blue Flower" on KROQ but wasn't impressed with it at the time. It wasn't until I heard "Fade Into You" that I got Mazzy Star, and I fell HARD. I went back and got that first album, too, and have been a big fan ever since.

trif you haven't rated any hope sandoval & the warm inventions yet, if you're going to binge mazzy you should include their albums if you aren't yet familiar. same band, effectively

"same band, effectively"
Not at all, imo. They both have hushed sounds with a very similar vibe, but the songwriting habits are different and Warm Inventions is a bit more interesting instrumentally, especially on the latest two. I guess you could say Bavarian Fruit Bread is pretty Mazzy Star-ish, but after that i think theres a clear separation. I think they tend to get a little weirder and more surreal at times. I personally like Warm Inventions better.

"not at all"
by EFFECTIVELY i'm meaning: you're going to get a pretty recognizable mazzy star experience in the end, even if there are some stylistic differences between the two groups. even that i'm not super sold on, i mean.. i'd argue bavarian fruit bread is more similar to among my swan than among my swan is to she hangs brightly.

Oh nice, I'll do that budgie, could do with some more along these lines.
Johnny it has to be Shara Nelson for me. Blue Lines will forever be their best record and she's all over that one.
