drums sound awful, goes to show how much production has declined over the years
Nick does sound awesome but I wonder what kind of studio shenanigans they had to pull off to make him sound that good, no way he can pull that off live imo. I'd love to be proven wrong tho

kind of the struggle I face with a lot of re-recordings, some things are better yet some areas took a cut. I agree that Holmes sounds awesome here and the guitars also rock, definitely some essence of their resurrected death-doom sound. But the drums sound like they were mixed for a different project..

Album seems to always be better than I think. The rerecording was ok.

For what it's worth, I saw them live in Lisbon last December 16, playing this album in it's entirety, and Nick sounded better than he has in many year (last time I had seen them was 2019 and he wasn't sounding this amazing, for sure).

Album is stellar but I’ve been really struggling with the shift in vocals on this one. While the growls were nothing incredible, these cleans feel really forced and generic. I think I’ll keep moving forward with their discog bc I’ve been hung up on this album. Again, musically I think it’s wonderful. I wonder if I’d dig Icon 30? Sorry to all the super fans who find my comment blasphemous, just my opinion and I mean no disrespect. Very excited to hear the rest of this bands music

gothic metal lives off the dichotomy of less-than-ideally (real and emotional feeling) sung vocal lines paired with amazing riffage and general great moody instrumentation.
the cure, katatonia the list goes on.

no disrespect taken but for me the vocals on this are top 3 metal vocals of all time

The songs are great here. Unfortunately the musicianship isn't. The vocals and lead guitar are off-key far too often. Draconian Times is where everything really clicked into place for them.
The re-recorded version of this is better.

I vehemently beg to differ, if what you say were the case, album wouldn't be considered a classic, even and especially in the '90s.
That said, I haven't listened to the re-recording, and I don't plan to do so, because it’s sole purpose is to provide a solution to a business problem.

its the superior listening experience though regardless of its purpose.
