Off first listen four tracks with Olaf are easily the best which is not surprising and perhaps the ones with Trent Reznor are the worst which is also not surprising. But I anticipate everything after the first four songs to be growers.

New Utensils is so good I don’t know if I can ever listen to other music ever again. Shiver through Kandy is just…. Unacceptably amazing.

Sounds like her classic sound - more Silent Shout/ST than Plunge.

Carbon dioxide has plunge vibes and the two Reznor songs just don’t sound like anything they’ve done at all lol but otherwise I agree for the most part

Yeah, I didn’t mean to say it’s a retread - I’d expect a progression in her sound every time and there’s definitely unique stuff here but this one sounds more like it’s come from that direct lineage

It does for sure, it does a good job of encapsulating pretty much her entire discogs worth of styles but with a new edge. My only complaint really is that it’s too short and that Even It Out is so different that on first listen it kind of interrupted the flow and I was unsure if it really fit in with the rest of the album. But I’m already warming on it and if it grows more it might settle into its place.

There’s a good chance this’ll be in my top three Knife related releases, something satisfying about it - it’s a bit like Fever Ray ST+ for me, think a good chance of being my favourite of the solo albums

I think the brevity is good, 45 minutes and imo I think every song pulls it’s weight here, I think having an outlier like Even It Out break up what would be a very smooth listen is better in the long run - my ideal would be most artists release about this much material every two years like clockwork but I get it doesn’t always work out like that.

Yeah it’s very realized. S/t was “safe” off the heels of all of the Knife’s previous work, but that was ok because it was so damn consistent and beautiful. Plunge was a lot riskier with some big pay offs but the end result was very uneven / erratic both in tone and quality. This strikes me as a happy medium. She’s taking Plunge level risks but within the parameters of what was tried and true about s/t and without compromising the aesthetic and tonal cohesion so much.

I know what you mean, too short is more often than not a good thing because even if it leaves you frustrated for more, you want to listen to it over and over again. I mean how often does a bad album feel too short? Most of my favourite albums feel/are “too short”. It’s just tough cuz you know this is it from her for another like 5 years or more.

“ Shiver and New Utensils my go-to tracks for now. So good”

Yeah, those are the big immediate tracks for me out of the ones I hadn’t already heard previously. They honestly flat out overshadowed the rest on first listen. Second listen had me appreciating the rest more already tho.
