the very definition of an opinion is that it can't be wrong
my opinion is that i think this is a good album and i enjoy listening to it. you can't tell me that i don't think that and that i don't enjoy listening to it.
ok: my opinion is that the earth is flat, the moon is made of green cheese, and every Creed album ever released is a perfect 5.
answer that and tell me opinions can't be wrong.

"my opinion is that the earth is flat,"
wrong because it is not subjective
"the moon is made of green cheese,"
wrong because it is not subjective
"and every Creed album ever released is a perfect 5."
cant say this is wrong, it's subjective

well, the moon and earth things can be disproved by hard scientific facts, something that doesn't apply to music, but if you honestly believed every creed album was a 5, i could argue with you but again, it's a valid opinion.

It is?

yes

yeah that's exactly what i thought you guys would say. opinions CAN BE WRONG, as demonstrated by the flat earth and "made of green cheese" statements. however, do these statements cease to be opinions simply because they are scientifically wrong? no, they do not. those statements are demonstrably false...and yet i can still hold them as opinions. opinions can be valid and false at the same time.
so, with the Creed example: there is a difference between saying Creed is your favorite band of all time (valid opinion), and saying that Creed is the best band of all time (valid but wrong opinion). if Creed really was my favorite band, you couldn't tell me i was wrong. because that would be to say that Creed actually isn't my favorite band, and the reality is that no one but me can make that judgement. it's a personal thing.
however: if i said that Creed was the best band of all time, you could prove this as demonstrably false. you would be able to show me bands with better riffs, bands with better lead guitar, bands with better melodies and harmonies, a better rhythm section, more thought-out and creative structuring, better-written lyrics, and just more musical skill and talent all around. you probably wouldn't change my opinion, and you wouldn't have made it any less valid, but you would have proved my opinion to be wrong.
why?
because there ARE standards for what constitutes music as being good, bad, or mediocre. the whole study of music would be pointless if there wasn't an absolute way to define a passage of music as being "better" or "worse" than another passage, or define some music as "good" and other music as "bad."

opinion - a belief or judgment that rests on grounds insufficient to produce complete certainty.
Since we know the moon isn't made of cheese, the statement is therefore NOT an opinion
however: if i said that Creed was the best band of all time, you could prove this as demonstrably false. you would be able to show me bands with better riffs, bands with better lead guitar, bands with better melodies and harmonies, a better rhythm section, more thought-out and creative structuring, better-written lyrics, and just more musical skill and talent all around. you probably wouldn't change my opinion, and you wouldn't have made it any less valid, but you would have proved my opinion to be wrong.
How do you measure this "better"?
| | | If you thought Creed was the best band of all time, I'd be in no place to discredit your opinion. Now stop the incessant blather and get back on topic.

wrong fuckign wrong omg
music is subjective
"however: if i said that Creed was the best band of all time, you could prove this as demonstrably false. you would be able to show me bands with better riffs, bands with better lead guitar, bands with better melodies and harmonies, a better rhythm section,"
'better' is subjective
'but you would have proved my opinion to be wrong.'
no because it's subjective
"why?"
'because there ARE standards for what constitutes music as being good, bad, or mediocre.'
no there arent
'the whole study of music would be pointless if there wasn't an absolute way to define a passage of music as being "better" or "worse" than another passage, or define some music as "good" and other music as "bad."'
no it wouldnt
we can have these 'definitions' of what makes people like music because most people agree on a lot of things about music
doesnt make them objective
| | | Album Rating: 3.5
I agree, but there are standards for what constitutes music as being good, bad, and mediocre.
rules of melody, rhythm, and dynamics
and yeah, that "emotion" crap :-)

If you think that way, I guess there could be anyone like anything. There might exist SOMEbody that likes screeching noises and nonsense patterns, there might be some people that say their favorite painting is looseleaf paper shredded and spit on, you know?
We have to respect those standards, at least please. There is a line between art and nonsense even though art is subjective and ever changing
