oops sorry I forgot to add Self-Indulgent in the definition, maybe art instead of Art could also be more fitting/politicaly correct

"there's a certain objectivity to a rating and i don't possibly see how a 5/5 album could have a moment you HATE on it.

really, you love this album enough to give it a PERFECT score, but you HATE a moment on it? Sounds like something that isn't a perfect 5/5 to me, since it has a large flaw that obviously bugs him enough to make a big critique on it."

you are the worst type of person tbh

"Calling it pretentious is basically belittling the artist by somehow assuming a position where you know how they feel better than they do."

um, no? look up the word.

ovdeath are you a troll account? is that seriously snoxall hiding in there? i wouldn't be surprised at this point in the discussion.

ov: give me a break... you're trying to lecture me on the criteria for something purely subjective (ie: there is no definitive scale, and 'perfect' is a grossly misused word - especially in the context you used it). you sound like a music snob

dude, you are literally the last person i'm going to debate grammar with. you were the guy that tried telling an entire thread of writers far beyond your abilities that you used 'warring' and many other misused words in the right context, despite quite a few people telling you you were flat-out wrong.

i never once insinuated that i know or care about what it means to him, i'm speaking strictly as it's presented to me, the listener. it's pretty nonsensical, and he tries to affect this really profound, quiet-whisper and i think it's incredibly lame. it is, however, mere seconds long, so i still maintain that a few seconds isn't enough to deter me from loving this album as much as i do. there is no such thing as a 'perfect album.' deal.

it's a clear, easy way to express how much one likes the album. dunno what there is to hate about that

"I feel like it's a completely useless and completely untelling system that serves no purpose other than to confuse."

It's expedient, but I think it's pretty clear that someone who rates an album a 4 enjoys it more than someone who rates it a 3.

^anything said beyond this point is seriously a waste of time. snox is the least receptive person ever in arguments and always favours himself. i can't recall a single time i i made a suggestion that he took to heart.

rating systems like he's talking about are reserved for only the most elite. they're above us, man.

i mean ratings are mostly arbitrary anyway, it's just a way to assign a letter (or in this case number) grade to something to express how much you enjoy it. it's not like you're sitting down with a huge checklist and then formulating a mathematical equation to deduce how much you enjoy something. our opinions are always changing too, so maybe one day i think this is a 5 and in a few weeks/months, it's grown off of me, or i've played it too many times. i don't know about you guys, but i'm perfectly content with that

Are you seriously suggesting that the site would be better off with a huge checklist that does not differentiate in any way between albums?

"a lot of reasons i won't bother getting into right now or probably ever again because i went into it once and can't be bothered doing it ever again."

Are you saying that after you went into it the first time, the userbase didn't experience scales falling from their eyes and a sudden swing towards what must be the only rational perspective?

nah, that's just the lazy and misleading way of saying 'i have nothing valid to say'

"Hell yes. A "167 listened" rather than rated system would be better. The average ratings system is damaging and really turns off a lot of people from hearing great records because it has a less than average rating on the band page or something."

The damaging part of the ratings system is something that people have to overcome individually, which I agree is hardly ideal, but it's worth it in order to be able to get a rough measure of someone's taste by scanning their ratings, or to have a checklist that marks out what you consider good albums and what you consider shit ones.

"nah I wrote an article on it a while back and now it's lost and i can't be bothered explaining it again because i don't care -that- much to repeatedly write it out"

Cool. Since this page kicked off with grammar, nice split infinitive.

what snox is proposing is completely retarded. how would you keep track of the albums you really loved if it was just a checklist showing you listened to it? one of the reasons it's so convenient to have it the way it is now is that i can jump straight to my 5s or 4.5s for something great, and oftentimes i do so without even knowing what i want to listen to until it jumps out at me.

johnny made an excellent point too. it helps us keep up to date with music and be able to share it with others. i got 90% of my music off of this site by searching through users' ratings. ratings help me discern how likely it is that i'll enjoy or dislike something based on who's rating it. (more often than not i love albums that crysis gives 2.5s and 3s too, so when i see that he rated the new whatever a 2.5, i can tell it has a high probability of being really good.

snox is suggesting we abolish the rating system altogether to not deter people from checking albums out. well, firstly i think he's grossly overestimating the influence of the overall average, and anyone who would be deterred for such a thing (especially considering the relatively small sample sizes) is missing out and that's their problem. the overall averages are indicative of how the majority of the community feels, and sputnik's community has its own identity; its own classics.
