Priest Screaming For Vengeance and Painkiller are worth it...as are all of Maiden's albums pre-90s and post-90s.

Every album having a 4.5 avg should be automatic instant eargasm. I find many albums with such extremely high averages fall short, while albums around 3.8 - 4.1 usually deliver on all fronts. Weird?

They're supposed to represent how good an album is according to the listeners en masse. The problem begins when people start thoughtlessly rating albums too high just because everyone else does it.

BTW my opinion when it's actually relevant to this thread is that The Gallery is a great album. I must have confused it with Skydancer or something at first, because when I listened to it yesterday it didn't have that haphazard feel... as much.

So it turns out that's precisely what I said.

the problem is not that u dont like this album as much as some people. The problem is your condescending attitude that because people don't hold the same opinion as you, they must be just rating this album to follow the general consensus. Oh heavens! some people actually agree with crysis that this is a 4.5/5! what are we ever to do! Believe it or not there are some people who just happen to hold that opinion because....thats how they feel! the shock! the horror!

Well then how would you explain Blackwater Park? Is it really THAT good that it deserves a 4.5 avg? Nowhere near as, even though it's easily a 4 album. I don't feel wrong about the average The Gallery has got, it's appropriate.

Well whatever. I really like prog metal and all, but Blackwater Park is way overrated for me. With each repeated listen I like less and less of it. Even the sheer number of people voicing their disappointment by that album is much greater than for your typical run-of-the-mill 4.0 album out there - has to tell you something.

its not a case of average rating of a particular album, whether u think an album is overrated is irrelevant. For example, i could turn round and say i think Tool's Lateralus is an extremely overrated album and that its average rating is too high (which i do really believe) but that doesnt mean every person is rating that album based on the general consensus that Lateralus is a 21st century masterpiece. I'm sure some people are, but you're letting your opinion decide for you that 'Oh my god this album is so overrated! therefore everyone must be rating solely based on its reputation/the consensus of other people!'

Can't you see how generalised and stupid that statement is? you make it sound like people don't actually hold their own opinions and tastes when quite clearly in the case of you and me (me with lateralus, u with this and blackwater park) people do. I just think you can't accept the fact people like me are rating this because we actually think this album is that good, not that because the rating/general consensus tells us to.
