if everything are the next two Mars Volta albums, yes... but that's about it ;)

it's like De-Loused torn to pieces and put back together randomly, only that it's much worse than that description implicates. it's just that they seem to have lost their ability of songwriting over night and suddenly decided that instrumental abilites and ambience soundscapes are everything an album needs. maybe garnished with a hint of genius every now and then that makes the rest seem even worse. sorry, I really want to like it and I do like De-Loused, but this is one of the very few highly rated albums I dislike where I don't think the fault is mine

There's plenty of method behind the madness on this record, although it wouldn't seem so on the first few spins. It really takes multiple listens for everything to unfold. And, sure, they could have taken out huge bits and made everything much more concise. It's really a matter of whether you like huge, expansive music or not. If you need to hear a melodic hook or a sing-along chorus every 15 seconds, then no, this album is not for you. If you like your music a bit more cerebral, with ample time given to tension building, harmonic and rhythmic expansion, etc., then you've found the mother-load. I guess you can pick out the people with ADD by who's walking away from this album first.

My buddy is in the ADD crowd. He actually took this album, ripped it, dragged it into some expensive editting tool he uses for his own music, and made a significantly abbreviated edition of this album. I've heard it and it did sound pretty damn good. But, it was like the diffrence between a movie and a book. Those that have read the book know why its superior in every way and how much the moviegoers are missing when the lights go down. But, those seeing the film have no idea that they're missing anything at all.

de-loused is much more random than this album. this album's flow is perfect and uninterrupted until the end. the long ambient sections fit in grand scheme of things, which with this album is a ginormous slab of spacey prog and crazy energetic bursts. idk i just think TMV are something you love or hate. or if you're Mendigo you rate it a 3.

no, that really isn't the matter ;) and while it is true that it isn't for people who "need to hear a melodic hook or a sing-along chorus every 15 seconds", a lack of catchiness is my least problem.

it's just that there are bands that are much better at "tension building, harmonic and rhythmic expansion"

I rated it a three, cause it has it's share of great moments but a lot of stuff I don't "get" as well. so it's a kinda mixed experience to listen to it, you have a part you really enjoy and then wait for five minutes until the next one arrives. I still think Mars Volta have the ability to do something really amazing and mind-blowing, but they're just way too inconsistent.

Every now and then I put this album on again, believing that it has to grow better, but it never really does

This album is just a mess.

When they get a song to work it's great but a lot of it just seems like they just deciding to go and record random noodling.

really The Widow is the only thing that brings this album down, and it's still a great song

you are silly my friend...the only thing that brings this album down is that the title track doesn't come with the normal copy of the album...otherwise it is flawless...or at least as flawless as an album actually could be

Too much randomness going on for my taste. Some of the songs half of it is just atmospheric noises and then they finally do something (Miranda, That Ghost Just Isn't Holy Anymore).

I'll have to listen to it again but nothing on the album really stood out over time aside from L' Via l'Viaquez. I knew I'd get flack for it but I stick with what I said.

You have to let the "atmospheric noise" do what it's supposed to and create the mood for the songs...especially with Miranda...i can't listen to it and enjoy it unless i hear the lead in...it is perfect and is what makes the song so powerful in its own right...

i kind of have to agree with JAV. Usually I cant finish Cygnus because of 4 minutes of space at the end. I wouldnt exactly call it randomness, as the noise does build up mood and contributes to the story. But the noise it what really brings it down for me. Over this i prefer deloused.

Well I listened to it again all the way through and I still feel pretty much the same.

When it works it's amazing when it doesn't it really sucks.

It always feels like they're trying to do too much at once and completely lose focus of what they initially set out to do.

It's kind of a frustrating listen to me.

I find most TMV albums don't really hit you til about listen 8-10...when first hearing them they feel like complete chaos with no direction but eventually what was aimed at comes to be heard...especially this and uber-especiallyh amputechture...the more you listen the ore it starts to gel...i find this to be true for TMV more than an other band...
