I just can't get into this band... I've tried and tried. Ilyena is the only song that was alright.

You two better not talk because it's clear you came here for semantics...has anyone heard the bonus tracks for this? I am personally loving Things Behind The Sun, the Nick Drake Cover right now.
It's a very mellow track nd since they said the next album will be going in that direction and i'm all for it.

Yeah, I tried getting into this band again earlier this week and I gotta say, this band is just flat out annoying tbh. Even with repeated listenings, I just want to take the cd and break it in pieces.
^dub sean... I just listened to yoshimi again this morning! Isn't it awesome? This Message Edited On 05.09.08

Yes man, I'm freakin obsessed with that whole album right now. I'm just getting into the Flaming Lips, what album should I go for next?

^Oh sweet. Well, personally, I would go for At War with the Mystics, but most people would say The Soft Bulletin because that's their big classic supposedly. I love them both but Mystics just appealed to me more, probably because I found it a bit more catchy, so it's more immediate. The Soft Bulletin is more "symphonic." But honestly if you loved Yoshimi you're gonna like both so go for whichever.
If you decide to go back further in their catalogue, the only one I'd skip for the time being is Zaireeka, mostly because it is four albums that have to be played all at once on different speakers for it to make sense, and I'm not kidding lol. (It's tedious and way pretentious but trust me, once you do it, you won't regret it. You just probably don't feel like doing that right now.)This Message Edited On 05.09.08

Dubster and dummy...please leave the dopey non-mars talk to another board thank you very much...
This album is my favorite of 08 so far...just so much intensity, pridgen owns the sticks, and the end of ilyena is boner-inspiring.This Message Edited On 05.09.08

@ Willfellmarsy: I know I stated this already but I feel like I made my views more concise after repetitive listens to this album...
Pridgen(to me) is a REALLY annoying drummer. I think he's built to wow the average listener by overplaying ridiculously...which is kind of cool. I guess he's one of those guys that can get you into drums, but for me personally I can't stand it. Like I literally cannot listen to the middle section of Ilyena because his overplaying bothers the shit out of me. I dunno...it's weird.
I think this album is a 3 in my book...

If you want to be technical, Jon Theodore did a lot of complex overplaying just for the sake of it. But I love Theodore's style a lot more than Pridgen. Pridgen still kind of makes me want to cry though with his lightning fast stuff. Goliath owns so fuckin' hard.

I think the parts where he "overplays" are caused more by the fact that he's the new guy and feels he needs to show off his mad skills. I really like technical music so i don't see listening to him as a bother, but if you think he overplays, try to check out their covers.
I said i was digging these already, but the slower covers they did for this album show a surprising amount of restraint. I think on their next "Mellow" album, his pl,ay won't be as off-putting.
Right now i still think Theodore was a better fit, but Pridgen wows me more.

IMO, this album is a little too "crazy" at some times. Such as sick drum solos over random notes on the flute and hands randomly sliding up and down the fingerboard. Other than that, its sick.
