The disparity between Leaves and the rest of this band's discog in averages is laughable.

I think that album basically peaks at about the top of the bottom third of their discog for me

0.3 isn't that silly a gap

"challenge at bottom is so silly"

Challenge has its moments, but is the closest they have to a stale record. Mix of misplaced punk songwriting and stodgy engineering - The claims they've made about it as an awkward transition while they found their feet as a studio band scan to me - the bangers in the first half don't have remotely the same edge as their earlier stuff in the same vein and the backend (while stronger) has an oddly airless sound to it. The ideas are there, but those end tracks are so clearly reaching for the sound that Leaves' 'organic' sound and psych influences fleshed out with so much more definition

yeah i fully agree that the first few tracks are the most safe Unwound ever got but i still think theyre bangers and the rest of the album works due to the vibes for me (studio band is v accurate)

See I love Challenge exactly because its the only Unwound album to marry the psych fuckery of Leaves with the noisest extremes of their punk origins; tho it is admittedly pretty clunky, and I don't care for Laugh Track or Plastics

I think Leaves is very good but could easily stand to be like 15-20 minutes shorter than it is. One Lick Less could already easily be cut.
