I like Twilight in Olympus a little better than this, but not by a lot. This has no Through the Looking Glass, so that's what gives TiO the edge over it.

Yea Twilight is marginally better than this

Besides the first two tracks and ttlg, TiO is a tad boring, IMO.

Just got V is it their best?

V is my favorite as it is their most cohesive. You really feel how it's a concept album from the beginning to the end. A lot of people prefer The Divine Wings of Tragedy though, which is my second favorite. It's really a matter of personal preference. V is more melodic in sound I'd say, whereas DWOT is more progressive.

I can only handle so much prog with my metal so looks like I'm starting at the right place. Evolution rips

V is a very well thought-out album nontheless. Its individual songs are pretty straight-forward for the most part, but there are recurring themes and stuff. It's another form of progressiveness. Not as flashy but still intelligent.

Ok cool it doesn't wank too hard. A lot of DTs stuff is too much for me

Yeah, I get where you come from - Symphony X have never been on that level of senseless showing off, fortunately. Until this album, at least.

Symphony X are generally better songwriters than Dream Theater.

Yes, definitely, agreed.
The Divine Wings is a prime example of how to do a 20 minute prog metal epic.

Yeah, they were very good at songwriting. V is the pinnacle of that.
When you are finished with it you can go either with TDWoT (more melodic/symphonic/bombastic) or The Odyssey (more heavy/thrashy and less symphonic)

Cool thanks for the advice. Other than queensryche and savatsge i haven't given prog metal a chance

Fates Warnings is also good, but their albums are divisive: Some are more prog/rock, some others more thrashy, some more heavy metal; so it's hard to recommend one as their best.

Seventh Wonder and Evergrey are worth a shot too.

I'd say V is their most diverse album that represents every aspect of the band's sound
