the doom element is pretty mild on half these songs - and Nick is actively trying to sing like Hetfield
still don't get it, black album has some classic tunes

I'm only saying all this because this last week I listened to the black album twice for the first time in about 5 years - and honestly I enjoyed it a lot

I'm just going to be cheeky and say it's an age thing for me. I was one year and one day old when it came out :p

--Icon also sounds like Metallica except for a few songs. Also, I am not shy about loving Black Album.--
No way. Icon doesn't sound like Metallica musically or vocally. I also like the Black Album, I'm just being a smart ass.
--Metallica's last good album was Master of Puppets. Everything after was trash.--
... And Justice is easily their best album... just saying.
--This has better and more memorable songwriting than Icon.--
A majority of Icon is classic stuff. Only 'Poison' and 'Shallow Seasons' aren't classic Paradise Lost songs. This has "Hallowed Land", "Forever Failure", and "Once Solemn".

Lolno and it's not even close
"A majority of Icon is classic stuff. Only 'Poison' and 'Shallow Seasons' aren't classic Paradise Lost songs. This has "Hallowed Land", "Forever Failure", and "Once Solemn"."
I don't disagree, I got both rated at 4.5. This is just more enjoyable, but as far as by how much, there isn't a lot between the two.

Imo Draconian Times is more refined and polished. You can hear on the Last Time the band's effort to break the chains and gain some air play. Icon is darker, more claustrophobic and less ethereal. I enjoy both and not only. Great discography, even Host rules. Btw, of course AJFA is easily top 3 Metallica, at least better than Ride..

For me AJFA is on the same level of blandness as DM or Hardwired - not outright terrible but nothing to write home about.
Ride is the best Metallica agreed

"Only 'Poison' and 'Shallow Seasons' aren't classic Paradise Lost songs"
Willie bro Poison is the worst for sure imo but how is Shallow Seasons not classic PL? The first 30 seconds are one of my favorite moments in the entire discography (pure goth!) and Holmes' delivery after that is so frenzied, in the "the thoughts ARISING, there's no DISGUISING WHERE YOU'VE BEEEN" bit he sounds like a deranged priest or something.
