So they say. And so far I've felt I kept up pretty nicely. Yet this certainly doesn't bode well for the years to come.

I'm thinking the songs from here they play on the live Garden of the Titans album are the better versions.

to me, the new standard prog sound in progressive metal is the polished solo and grunchy, djenty rhythmic section, mostly technical. The genre bending is mandatory, vocals are probably both clean and harsh, and there's a Tool worship again. Most bands deal with ''personal'' issues, or environment, try to have concept albums on stories of ''inner searching'' etc. and are mostly abstract in their lyrics. The production is very clean, to the limit of synthetic... If they're from the US, they're flirting with metalcore, or tech death. European are more post-rockish, or ''gothic'', in the same way Opeth can have this ''baroque'' aesthetic, or are more symphonic. That's my take on ''generic prog band''.
