I was one of the few that dug this when it first came out.

Idk what happened, but the reaction was just as bad if not worse than Serpent.

I like To Drown. I'm not a fan of the ending of Nidstang, that last vocal section should have been left out in my opinion.

I agree with Artuma, I have no idea how you can be a fan of Agalloch and say this album doesn't have the emotional punch or style they're known for..

I've already explained numerous times why it doesn't, mainly the trying to be bm really gets in the way for the potential they would usually have. They still manage to make a mostly great album though, despite how jarring and confused it is.

Everything you just said is wrong (@Talons), except for the first part of the second sentence I guess. BM is and has always

been the root of their sound, so idk why that's even a problem.

This easily has just as much atmosphere and emotion as their other releases, I don't know how you can say it doesn't just because they lessened the folk elements a bit and increased the prevalence of black metal in the sound.

"but you can't deny it's severely different from what they've done before."

All their albums are different from what they've done before though..

Their first three were barely black metal at all, unlike this. Into The Painted Grey is definitely one of their best songs and Black Lake does have its moments.
