Salvation, ASTNS & Panopticon are the pinnacle of the genre

best album outside of that ‘genre-peak triumvirate’ is Inle by Fall of Efrafa

then… (The Ties That Bind / Ashes Against The Grain / Elysian Magnetic Field / Affliction XXIX II MXMVI)

Precambrian, The Ape of God & Rosetta’s various goodness is somewhere after this

(I’m not ranking all the top 3’s albums individually because a lot would go above these groups).

If you enjoy ASTNS this should be right up your alley actually, it has those slow doom-y vibes mixed with the atmo-sludges

it’s a narrative-linked trilogy (vaguely based on Watership Down), but doesn’t have to be listened to as such to enjoy it, imo

Years and years of listening to this shit and my go-to albums have largely settled on The Galilean Satellites, A Dawn to Fear, Wavering Radiant and the Ties that Bind. So those are my picks for best in the genre at this point.

I'll basically accept an argument for any CoL album though, and to me the first three Rosetta albums are at least as captivating as the best CoL and Isis have to offer, and each for a different reason. I'll stan for them forever.

Also, depending on how far we stretch the bounds of the genre, it kind of surprises me that Pelican doesn't get much love around here, and that Teethed Glory and Injury / Mass IV / Pelagial and the like don't come up in these convos more often.

That second group of releases don’t come up as often because they’re not as good 😆

A fair amount of people do love Rosetta and / or Pelican tho
