Her most recent album was a lot better than this.

Disagree. The highlights on this are better than anything on Melodrama.

This album felt like Lorde was just on autopilot and not really giving it her all (plus Royals was a steaming pile of garbage with some of the worst lyricism I've heard from a mainstream artist in a long time), but she really blossomed in Melodrama, and explored her more fun aspects.

autopilot on a debut album? lmao ok

I was on the hype train very early (she had a couple months of lowkey NZ buzz before she blew up) but I've kinda concluded she isn't that great. She has her moments, but they're mostly scattered across the first EP and this album. What I initially liked about her was the ethereality in songs like Biting Down and Buzzcut Season, her courage to make a pop song centre around a vibe or atmosphere, and that didn't really make it onto her sophomore album. Instead she dialed up the corn, the cheese and (quite literally) the melodrama and kept writing tumblr poetry about teeth over increasingly generic-sounding angsty pop and I just... yeah. Oh well.
