I am not my rosy self

Left my roses on my shelf

Take the white ones, they're my favorites

It's the side effects that save us

"Oh, when I lift you up you feel

Like a hundred times yourself"

Matt. What's with the fat shaming? (also "Humiliation" is the best thing the will ever achieve)

Humiliation was incredible played live, they gave it a hard rock makeover

Never say never with The National, can see them improving again next album

When are you going to 5 this?

"Humilation" live is amazing yeah, Matt totally goes off the deep end when he performance that song.

I can see them improving for sure, but I doubt that they will hit me this hard again.

I actually had it 5'd at some point. But if I compare it to Boxer, I feel like this is a bit less consistent in quality. I actually think "Fireproof" is the worst song since their first album. "Heavenfaced" is also merely listenable and nothing great. "I should live in Salt" is good but imo the weakest opener since "Beautiful Head".

On Boxer on the other hand there are like 3 songs I'd rate strong 4/5 (Ada, Racing like a Pro, Squalor Victoria) and everything else is perfect.

It's a testament to how good they are, that everyone has different favorites.

@ Gyro answer me in the Julia Holter thread dude.

The album has more songs and I don't really see the opener and closer as standalone songs but in the context of the album are perfect fits.

Heaven-faced has an awkward second half but starts nicely.

Fireproof I've grown to like a lot, bit underwritten maybe but like the feel of it.

My least favourite is probably 'I need my girl' which people quote as their favourite, it's certainly not a bad tune just doesn't grab me.

"I need my girl" is another 3.5/5 song for me.

It sounds like am harsh on the album, but it's a solid 4.5/5 so I do love it. But not quite as much as Boxer.

Also Doofus, what are your top 5 the national songs?

Tough question...this changes all the time and not putting them in order...

1. Slow Show (I claim this is my favourite due to romantic pressures and its top 5 but prob not my real favourite)

2. Sorrow (this probably is, some of my favourite lyrics, love they played that show where they just repeated this song for an hour or whatever, it had to be this song)

3. Brainy (probably the song that most typifies their sound and by that logic is an absolute banger)

4. Vanderlyle Crybaby (hard not to sing along 'still no surprisin' you', it's one for the fans)

5. Humiliation (hard to pick one from Trouble, like the game of two halves approach)

6. Green Gloves

7. Slipped (think I'm the only person who loves this)

8. Think You Can Wait

9. Demons

10. Blank Slate (2nd b-side on the list, has recently become a favourite)

I like the ballads a lot. Fake Empire, Ada, Geese of Beverley Road, Mistaken and Lemonworld would all have made the list at various points.
