Compared to their last two records it’s a bit more straightforward for sure, doesn’t make it bad

Take out Altered State and ig parts of Syndic Calls and every last section of Panop is straightforward A -> B with the occasional expedited lurch
Don't get me wrong, a lot of its builds are the best builds (So Did We is q possibly the apex of anything anyone has tried to do in that vein), but it puts more strain on a full album jam than it used to

does Panopticon a disservice but I get it
it certainly isn’t post-metal 101

“[Panopticon] certainly isn’t post-metal 101“
What on earth are you talking about lol, of course it is

Im confused by all of you. go away

Panopticon does so many little things well that there's really no detection of formula.
|
| |
Panopticon is one of the least formulaic albums I have ever heard. Each moment is a pleasant surprise

‘What on earth are you talking about lol, of course it is‘
lol, guessing you’re saying it set THE template

Idk if i would use those words but yeah virtually every single one of this band’s peers cite them as an influence. They borrowed from the OGs and took this style in a totally unique direction, that’s good enough for me to describe it as 101

fair enough, it’s deserving of that accolade

What would you consider to be be the 1st album in this style?
|
| |
Neurosis's early stuff or even earlier?

Most of Neurosis albums starting with Soul at Zero, excluding their Sun albums, because those are just worse versions of their true classics

Souls for sure

you’re underrating ASTNS though

Panopticon was obviously not the first post metal alb, but it epitomises all its tropes in a positive light and makes for an ideal genre intro (and even peak if you wanna go there, which I wish I still did) so yep easy 101 for the right reasons
Would say that Souls opened the door to post metal but Enemy of the Sun was the first real album for the genre, but that's not a hill I'd die on
Also how dare you shade ASTNS (aka the last true Neurosis classic)

A sun that never sets is practically perfect. Silly goose
|
| |
Also how is the eye of every storm not a classic, its easily one of the best albums of the last 30 years
