"Still haven’t watched. Prob won’t lol." yeah if reading all the comments on the film on different sites has told me anything, everyone seems to think the film (or the film's source material) was deliberately skewed to make varg look like a retard, and everyone seems to love that about the film
i think genetic exceptionalism and racism is horrible shit yes but here it seems incorrect to have this journalist type accounting of a series of events mixed with some caricatures and selective material to deliberately misrepresent some elements of it. i've never read LoC but i thought there was a solid consensus that the material is really sensationalistic journalism & if everyone is saying how they're glad varg appears particularly awful here because it's likely to insult him IRL eh
let me know if i'm wrong about this

If anyone's curious, Varg did a write-up on the Lords of Chaos book a while back:

Yeah I will say they tried to make him seem like bad in areas where there isn’t much proof of him being bad, like with women or whatever. Which like why are you reaching to try to make him look bad all you have to do is say he was a try hard white surpremacist murderer and arsonist

every movie needs a strong antagonist, right?

i dont think every movie needs a villain period. but even if thats the case, they didnt have to make it so over the top. He would have been a strong antagonist without all the extra stuff. But i think this movie would have been better if it was more ambiguous on who the "good" and "bad" guy was. It wouldve been one of those movies where its like "im on team Varg" or "team Eyronymous," and then there would be people like "fuck em both." Instead the movie treats us like a bunch of idiots and eschews all subtlety.
"See what an asshole Varg is? See? SEE? i dont think theyre getting it."

They went wayyyy over the top with Varg, with his Nancy-boy feathered hair and constantly yelling 'YOU SHALL ADDRESS ME AS THE COUNT HENCEFORTH'. Like, the guy is already a bad dude, why turn him into a cartoon? It would have been way more compelling if they painted him with a more sympathetic brush so that when he eventually goes full psycho, it actually feels like there was some kind of progression.

Also a villain who is made to look like such a dork isnt a good villain. Even going with the over the top approach they failed.

It may seem like i hated it with all the shit im talking about it, but i didnt. Im glad it exists, i had a fun time with it. Its just that they wasted obvious opportunities to make it better.

Well until the light takes us was clearly made from a super pro-varg place so I guess this is only fair that it’s leaned the other way
Also the LPOTL ended up doing a really good job imo, their analyzation of it is pretty spot on even if they don’t come from a fan perspective

they definitely went over the top making Varg an unlikable character on all fronts -- not even a sympathetic character until his eyes well up while he's killing Euronymous. I won't comment on whether he deserves sympathy in real life, but that just makes for a boring central piece of the movie.

The “scorpions” scene in the diner or whatever is so fucking funny like, I could watch that scene on a loop for like an hour

Its been years since ive seen it, but i dont remember it being pro-Varg at all, just seemed like they were trying to tell the story without taking sides.

Another thing i wouldve liked to see was more of Euronymous interacting with his family. Wouldve made the impact of his death more effective. He had two short scenes with his sister and that was it.

I agree with that, that’s one side of the story that isn’t told much. The inclusion of the knit sweater that his grandma liked him to wear was funny though
