I really wanted to love the Ascension. It's the kind of admirably difficult album that could've been done well by different hands in a different time, but somehow Sufjan's made a clunker

My main criticism is it's too long and too repetitive/predictable. There are some nice stretches for sure, but on the whole it's a slog. I mean, I *like* it. It's fine. It's just a little . . . out of touch with its vision, proggy in a bad way. Plus, the production strikes me as kinda lifeless

t/t on the new one is the only song that remotely captures Sufjan magic for me. the rest is underwhelming dollar store Adz with almost none of his melodic genius whatsoever and incredibly repetitive meandering songwriting
Video Game is easily one of the worst songs he's ever released
