For me it's definitely Vacant Planets, but the whole album is awesome

I know exactly which part you're talking about and it rules, especially when Sean puts that awesome double bass part in the second half of it

Vacant planets and sea through dreams’ chainsaw riffs make me forget about the nearly perfect lead and bass. It’s why I love technical death, everyone always popping off always lol

"It’s why I love technical death, everyone always popping off always lol"

True, but it also depends on what tech death you're talking about. The reason I love bands like Death and Atheist is because they play technical music without overloading the listener. The music is very tastefully written and performed, and doesn't become a bunch of riff salad because of how smoothly the songs flow :]

Whereas with a lot of modern tech death, there's not nearly as much memorability because the music just ADD-riddled riffing and soloing without much to string the ideas together

I think he was talking about the technical iterations of the band Death, not tech death the genre but idk

I pretty much said the same thing in my Colors II review. The ideas were cool, I just didn't like how they were arranged and organized. And as someone who prefers listening to albums in their entirety, that's a big deal to me

Edit: Yeah, I'm starting to think that might have been what he meant as well. Idk

I will say, though, that this thread has gotten me in the mood for another Death binge. Off I go!

Yeah I meant the death/cynic/atheist era but ya the difference between then and now is as you say, for the most part.

Both are 5s, yet this is more complex imo, they are just different.

Yeah this one trumps Symbolic for me no contest. Still got enough of that thrashy caveman goodness to keep me bopping but enough interesting musicianship to keep it consistently interesting. Plus very little in this world goes as ridiculously hard as the solo of Secret Face so there's that too.
