personal fave off Magma is Low Lands, which he def couldn't have gotten if Gojira didn't soften up their sound.

Dear Crack the Skye: FACED. Oh Hi, Blood Mountain: Fucking FACED. Whats that Leviathan? Oh yeah, you just got FACED hard, although not as hard as the other two.

I've been listening to this album this past week and it's pretty great to me. Dunno why the hate for this one

It's definitely more accessible and less proggy than anything that came before, I think that's why, but it never came off as forced or pandering to me. It feels like a logical progression from Crack the Skye, like they were still trying new things for them. They did their proggiest album and then they wanted to do something more immediate and fun. And some of the weirdness and playfulness they always had is intact here. I think Once More 'Round the Sun is where things started feeling like they were going through the motions, but even that record is solid to me. Emperor of Sand is where they lost me.

"Dunno why the hate for this one

mastodon copied the successful metallica model of having a super kickass driving single-type metal track as track #2, worked super well for first four albums (march of the fire ants, blood and thunder, crystal skull, divinations) and then..... curl of the burl. if you were a big fan of mastodon at the time you probably felt like they were the metal kings of the mid to late 2000s, and then.... curl of the burl.

maybe it's not a truly bad album but it gets hate because it marked the shift from metal mastodon into like, ford 150 commercial hard rock mastodon. same reason load and reload get what could probably be called undue hate

I dont think budgie is saying curl of the burl is bad per se...but like he said it marked a drastic shift in their sound that a lot of fans at the time found jarring, myself included
