They need to be heavy to balance their sound. With Around The Fur, it was Lotion, with White Pony, it was Elite, with S/T, it was When Girls Telephone Boys, with SNW, it was Rapture or RatsRatsRats, with Diamond Eyes, it was Rocket Skates, with KNY, it was Poltergeist, with Gore, it was S/T.

I agree on the balancing part but heavily disagree on there being one or two "heavy" songs pr album. You missed many bangers like Rickets, Hexagram, all of Adrenaline really, Royal, CMND/CTRL, Doomed User etc.
Deftones has always been about the blend of transcendent beauty and ferocious aggression. If one were to overwhlem the other it wouldn't work as well as it does now.

To be fair, I couldn't include Adrenaline because it was only a prototype of their sound. I only focused on one or two songs per album just to make a simple heavy-balancing point.
