based on your rating scale tho if 7/13 songs are mediocre (2/2.5) and the other 6/13 are songs you LOVE (let's say 3-5) shouldn't that average out to higher than a 2.5 just by simple math? not telling you how to rate an album just questioning your methods

No, because I don't use math to rate an album, I rate an album based on how much I enjoyed it as a whole cohesive work.

White Light White Heat is a great album, one of my favorites, but it doesn't even have a single song I'd call "a favorite of all time"(though it comes close in several areas).

If you really want to divide an album up into sections to justify giving a higher rating then how you FEEL like rating it, or just using math instead of your own personal opinion, you're kind of dumbing down your opinion of the album. Why use math to rate an album when you can just use your actual opinion?

I can totally respect that people like to say "this album has x amount of classics so it's an automatic x" but I just don't like that rating system. I'm *very* liberal with how i rate songs, because it's much easier to love a few songs than a whole album.

i fought with black malachite about this same exact thing before, and what i said then was that a mediocre score IS a bad score, so yeah i guess that's hypocritical of me. I guess 2.5 is a bad score, I just don't think of this as a bad album in the same vein as other albums. It's just really damn mediocre, and so yeah i guess it is bad as a cohesive whole

the reason people take issue with your rating system is because it all goes to the same average, so regardless of what you "mean" with your rating, it doesn't change what ends up on the final rep

I think it's a bit strange that you'd say this to someone with a vastly different opinion from the majority, but not to someone excercising their speech on a widely homogeneous basis. I don't think you'd say this to a thread full of people 2.5'ing St.Anger, or 5'ing In Utero, but apparently it's strange to show a different opinion.

Idk. I don't think they're mediocre at all, I think the work as a whole is, but Billy and the band have proven to be geniuses with a large selection of the songs here. Personally, I can't wait to get to Mellon Collie.
