"the middle of this album is pretty boring"

Nahh... Dirge for November rocks. Now, the ending of this album is pretty boring.

Dirge for November is the weakest song on the album but it still rules. Especially that bluesy guitar riff at the start of the song.

I actually think it's the best, and of the band's finest.

I saw these guys in New York City last year for their Evolution XX Tour. They played this album from beginning to end, no introduction, no breaks. This album is truly a masterpiece, viewed track-by-track and as a whole. Orchid and Morningrise are both incredible albums, triumphs of melodic death metal. I would say, however, that Blackwater Park is the first Opeth album to display the band's mastery of many different sounds, styles, and genres. Opeth has evolved and risen beyond the limits of categorization. Their range is narrowed with the first two albums.

And by the way, your description of Orchid and Morningrise as " discordant harmonic" is contradictory. The two are, by definition, opposites. I don't know if that was deliberate, but since you were being a dick to someone else I just thought I'd mention that. Unless you have a solid argument as to why one album is better than the other aside from preference, don't be condescending. And only a "music novice" would not acknowledge obvious musical precision and complexity nor appreciate the music as a work of art and self-expression simply because of a difference in preference. In a world where popular "musicians" are merely products for sale, creations of a desperate industry, a real music-lover recognizes real music when they hear it.

lotus, i know you like to try to sound smart but you really don't know what you're talking about. MAYH and Still Life were much better at combining styles of music while still being original. when i first heard this album, i was excited to hear what progression was made ontop of the high standard left by still life. i was met with, in my opinion, a watered-down version. bleak is actually a pretty good song without those porcupine cheese vocals

and dischordant and harmonic are both words that perfectly describe the first 2 albums. i really think you're smart enough to figure out how those terms apply to those albums
