Fun album. Not a masterpiece like BM and CtS but it wasn’t really meant to be either. They intended it as a change of pace, was a very calculated move. And it accomplishes what it sets out to do. Can’t wait to see these guys again in August with lamb of god.

feels like they were just like "dude I am tired of writing emotional high-concept material and counting bars of 11, let's just fuckin jam" and that was the M.O. for three albums. and by the time Hushed and Grim arrived, they were just entrenched in a different sound.

wasn’t eos a concept album though?

I don't think it has a story, per se, so much as a theme. they had this whole elemental cycle with the first four (fire, water, earth, aether) too. in retrospect, it was a good move to play more accessible and "fun" music, since the album sales and awards kept rolling in and it's not like they've made something super-lame.

This kicks the shit out of the next two imo.

Uh, I fucking despised this thing when it came out and thought it didnt even come close to touching their first four
I don't know if I've given it a chance since it came out though, so maybe I'll try this again after I finish the current album I'm jamming

Yeah man, I remember this not having the balls of Leviathan and Remission and also having zero of the musicality or emotional hits of Crack the Skye so it just left me with my soft dick in my hand and no lotion
Like I said, I'll try again, and I fucking adore their first four albums, but ugh I just have memories of this album thinking "another perfect discog ruined"

The more I listen to all of Mastodon's eras, the more I realize there is no bad Mastodon, but Once More and Emperor are def the 'worst' ones.

Jaguar God is one of the all time great Mastodons, but there is also a few too many mid tracks on that one.

The second half starts to slip a bit, but the first half is a banger fest.

Yeah first half is better
But fuckin wow, this was WAY better than I remember. I guess literally every album before this skyrocketed my expectations, especially when I was in my 20s and Mastodon was in my top 5 bands of all time
