that always perplexed me, because i certainly wouldn't expect them to make the same album twice and i still hear very distinct Underoath-isms scattered across even if it is a different style. to me it feels like a cross between Sleepwave and They're Only Chasing Safety where they stripped things back a lot compared to the crazy soundscapes of DTGL through Disambig.

I mean yes there are tidbits of their known sound that stick out on some tracks, the opener in particular always stood out to me in that way, but overall I feel like they simplified to the point that it could have been written by anyone. And writing aside, their performance of the material doesn't even elevate it, Spencer's half assed vocal performance being a prime example of keeping things as basic as possible.
"the crazy soundscapes of DTGL through Disambig"
This is the only stretch that I have ever cared about so I suppose it's not entirely fair of me to ignore potential similarities between TOCS and Erase Me writing.

i kinda like that they stripped it back and simplified it. definitely helped me appreciate them more since at first their known sound was a bit... Much for me.

erase me came out when my music taste was worse so i kinda liked it then but i tried the songs i thought were good on erase me for the first time in a while today and they were only alright so i wouldnt be surprised if i majorly drop it down if i listen again

yeah its been a hot minute since i jammed it so maybe it's worn off a little. a lot of stuff i loved in 2018-2019 has dropped a bit.

I gave Erase Me a 2.5 and at least 0.5 was nostalgia for what Underoath used to be
yeah I feel like losing faith can produce really compelling lyrics but, like, this is just r/atheism comments set to pretty decent music

Erase Me is trash. Legitimately the most disappointing album I've ever heard.

"these new lyrics are garbage. they read more like rants from a YouTube skeptic community video circa 2011 than any kind of meaningful take on doubt or loss of faith"

The angry and newly atheistic 15 year-old me would be very impressed with their recent lyrics.

And Underoath (or at least Spencer and Aaron) are in their late 30's and writing this stuff

tbh yeah the god jabs aren't as thought provoking as i'd have liked, not even close. they still do fine when theyre discussing other topics like mental health-related shit tho. give us more "In Motion" style lyrics or take from the likes of Paper Lung off this album, that's what i want more of if im honest.
