I think it wholly depends on what you're looking for:

- My Arms for their harsher sound

- Still Life for a dreamier concept album

- Blackwater Park for accessible and most widely recognised sound

- Ghost Reveries for a fantastic blend of metal/prog

Or you could go chronologically and see them progress, which is totally worth it too.

I may do the chronological order. I remember back then My Arms was my favorite by quite a bit but I was so obsessed with needing the heaviest stuff back then it was hard for me to fully appreciate the others on the level I should have. Think I may throw on Orchid now

Yeah that sounds like a great idea! Perhaps their less heavy side makes more sense when you witness their evolution first hand. Plus those early records are lovely and mystical and cute.

Reversed chronological could be interesting

Yet it would ask a lot of confidence that they'd be worth it, because of all the good-yet-not-stunning and sometimes even disappointing stuff you'd find early on then.

That qualifies as interesting so I guess this was the long way of saying: agreed.

ฮ™'m on an Opeth binge and I'm still on Ghost Reveries, really wanting to listen to Heritage rn. My thought is ''why is it bad to have sth good for the future?''
