I never personally learnt the theory side of things, or chords or anything, just went straight for songs. First stuff like slayer, then early vader and kreator, then Cannibal, then Necrophagist. Im not perfect, and my stuff is super sloppy especially with sweeps, but I enjoy it so fuck it. InMe are super fun too
