im not against it per se I just don’t really understand the logic behind it. it’s clear they want to abandon the whole neo death metal image but that’s like their whole fanbase. the synth noodling album had pretty harsh backlash and now they’re basically making a prog album and touring with a slow core band.
im just imagine a bunch of unwashed metalheads showing up and being either very confused or very bored.

I wouldn't say they're really alienating their base. Considering I saw them when they toured with Sissy fucking Spacek (literally the worst fucking band I've ever heard in my entire life) and Primitive Man, they're fanbase is mainly old heads and stoners. Going mid-tempo and touring with a down tempo band seems perfectly reasonable.

i don't really understand how you release a dm record as good as starspawn (and this to a bit lesser degree) and be like "oh let's toss the death metal aside"

It can happen if the band puts too much pressure on themselves to one-up each record versus the relative freedom that comes with incorporating or exploring other genres. They seem to really enjoy the alien/spacey elements of their music which isn't inherently death metal.

She toured with Deafheaven a few years ago too and in general has a pretty extensive tour resume. If i were to read anything into it I'd just assume this implied the new record was going to be more atmospheric, which I think is a safe bet anyway. I also appreciate the notion of shoving culture down metalheads' throats however possible so def W for them.

i find the notion that any version of what amounts to nothing more than popular music is any more or less cultured than another pretty unsavory and elitist.
looking down on metal even though it was the genre that got these guys popular is why their recent predilections leave such a sour taste in a lot of people's mouth. especially when this band is basically all fairly cynical marketing at this point.

“Looking down on metal” i literally can’t believe this take lol love you hype
Everything is a reaction to something especially in art and music. If you truly hated that these guys “look down on death metal” you’d better throw away all your black metal albums because a huge part of that ethos is being the antithesis of popular death metal at the time
Get on the bandwagon or get off at the next stop these guys are unstoppable and absolutely brilliant artists

Also calling what is this band is doing “nothing more than popular music” is an outrageous take in and of itself brother you need to chillll 😂

i mean its all just pop music man its like drums and guitars and vocals. what else would it be?

This whole convo is weird as fuck why can’t they just take a musical detour because they enjoy it? They’re still obviously playing death metal
