Yeah well, it "sounds" like the early stuff, alright. That doesn't mean it's as good in evolving its ideas. And it isn't. My problem with this is not the way it sounds, but where it goes with that sound. So yeah, not on board with that statement either.

So true. I've not actually heard Undertow (or 10k days) so the 'middle two' are my only basis for comparison. Presumably those criticising their lack of evolution are more well-versed in their material. Honestly though, this does sound very much like what I'd expect regardless. It's unmistakably Tool.
