Black Album is not elite so most people discredit it. Excellent album though.

Sure this is a metal classic, but it's successor and even predecessor (minus Escape) does it better.

The memorable riffs are the highlight of this album. The Thing That Should Not Be is one of Metallica's heaviest tracks. The title track has one of the most famous riffs in metal, instantly recognizable by even those not into the genre.

The lead work is very good, but not not as good as the following album. Kirk shines on Sanitarium, Damage, Inc, and the title track.

The drum work by Lars is decent enough, but he really showed his chops on the next release.

Due to the maturing Hetfield, the vocals are better on this record. They would continue to get stronger until their peak in 1992.

Now on to the bass work by the vastly overrated Cliff Burton. A good bassist, but did he make this album what it is? No. Cliff follows the rhythm guitar track after track, Orion aside. Why is Orion such a loved track? Because the bass is audible? This song is an unimpressive attempt at a Pink Floyd-esque sound.

This album is good starting point for anyone looking at metal, but the followup is a real gem.
