The debut is the most generic sounding alt country album possible - a worse debut than Pablo Honey Zak? Trying to think of other genius bands who started with a whimper...

I'd say it's worse than Pablo. It sounds as if their ground down to hell and have been in the biz for about 40yrs. How is it pos for a debut to sound so tired????? Trying to think of other shit debuts from all time greats and struggling.

Debut is so badly produced

But the song writing is still there

AFA - I'd say there are a few hints at what would eventually work for them but overall the songwriting and instrumentation is predictable and over familiar to anyone who'd listened to any country or alt country music.

Sad Songs is such a step up - they've realised by then that they can sometimes put Matt's vocals centre stage to do the heavy lifting and colour around them.

Yeah it is pretty bog standard alt country but that doesn't make it bad, there's only like 3 really boring songs

Pablo Honey is better than The National's debut, this is better than both and Sad Songs, but none of their others.

The National self-titled is better than Pablo Honey, but yeah Talons is right, this is better than Sad Songs and self-titled but nothing else by The National. (Although I may have to bump this up to a 4.5, it has been working more for me recently than it has in the past.)

The average ratings for this band, holy shit. I want to like the national but I just find it sort of boring. I'll give this album another listen, its been a while.

There is definitely a small minority who think Sad Songs is the best, but I just can't put it before anything that has come after it.

Watch them live and you might just come away thinking this is their best - Slipped, Pink Rabbits, Demons and Humiliation were so good when I saw them, definite set standouts alongside Slow Show and Vanderlyle Crybabies

Fuck it I have to 4.5 this. When it first came out it just didn't click at all, I gave it a grudging 3.5, then after about a year it grew to a 4 and now it's grown into a 4.5. It hasn't moved in my ranking of the National but now it's definitely nearly equal to Alligator.

I gave it a grudging 3.5 at first but now I give it a "wow this is pretty damn good" 3.5. I like it better than High Violet.

High Violet is the perfect national album [2]. But Boxer is an extremely close second.
