It's probably me being dumb, but I don't really understand the "homogeneous" critique
I mean, "most" bands have a certain signature sound and live of that sound
If I put on a death metal record, I don't really expect a lot of variety
I expect to hear the band in case executing their sound and executing it well

Same tbh

I do understand it. it can easily sound more like a repetitive blur of sounds than most of Sowing's 5s or whatever if you don't really know what you're supposed to be getting out of it

nah i get it, especially with this band and someone who doesn't listen to much dm
this was their most immediate record for me in a long while tho

Alright, mire, which one of sowing's fives is more sonically varied than this?
Not piling on anyone, just wondering.

Sincere question here. I love it when artists try to get out of their comfort zone and maybe take me with them. I mean, some of the most praised bands are the ones that try subverting the genre tropes. But I see that's not the case with dm fans. So, wouldn't you like dm bands experimenting and trying to escape cliche's?

yeah this is probably ulcerates more accessible album to date
more melody and graspable passages in here than in the rest of their discography
|
| |
for me, perhaps none of them: I dislike all of his 5s, but at least 4 of the 5 have more to latch onto in terms of things like vocal melodies. I guarantee most people could listen to this and a Brand New record and remember more individual tracks from the latter than from this
@Mythodea: musically, Ulcerate have developed over time in a very stark way to my ears so I almost can't parse the question. same with Gorguts, who have really never released two similar albums

"So, wouldn't you like dm bands experimenting and trying to escape cliche's?"
Depends, I guess. There's stuff that gets tagged "progressive death metal" that I like, of course - but if a band keeps it old school and does the old school thing very well, I'll like it just as much.

"wouldn't you like dm bands experimenting and trying to escape cliche's?"
Yes and no. I love the OSDM sound, but when any band of any genre gets onto album 3 or 4 and its just more of the same, i start to check out and wish that they would start making some changes.

@mire Yes, but you can't just latch onto one aspect of a hedonistic sonicscape and then just ignore the rest. DM primarily relies on guitar- and drumwork and how it's all arranged within one song.
I could argue every single 5 of his has nothing interesting except for vocal passages going for it, thus presenting it as an overly similar and repetitive experience.

first I'd impose a regime of listening to meshuggah for half a year every day for at least an hour before even ATTEMPTING to get into ulcerate

It's striking me as odd, however, because Ulcerate are not praised for keeping it real, but because they add to the genre.

i don't mind if a band tries to experiment a little but i also don't go into a tomb mold record or something and wish they weren't playing traditional dm.

Abridged version: they always sound like themselves but nobody sounds like them
Also, even tho it's been the same formula for each album since eif, theres always incredibly detailed little differences between the albums, each is really it's own thing within the context of ulcerate

@Pika: yeah, but my only argument was in defense of people with perspectives besides my own (who might not "get" this very much)

Oh guys, didn't expect so many responds in such a short time. Thanks. Anyway, while I do enjoyed some of the material, and certainly see the artistic values, I wasn't floored. I may return to it with time, maybe the whole sound grows on me.
