“It destroys 10K and wrestles Lateralus.“
Perfect description. I still like lateralus more but H, Eulogy, and Third Eye are some of their best tracks. There’s just too many goddamned interludes.

Interludes have always been their problem. Apart from that Aenima is easily their best one.

Wow, one of the first times I actually strongly disagree with you Dewi. I think it wrestles 10k and can't even hold a candle to Lateralus. Nothing on here except 7empest comes even close to the genius of The Patient, Schism, Parabola, Lateralus or Reflection.

And that's alright my friend, we all have our favorites and reasons for it ;)

Wow. Pika, we actually agree on something. You gained some respect from me on this eighth day of September, 2019.

But yeah, the bit in The Grudge where the band builds up to MJK singing "and sinking deeper!" and then there's that slight pause before the whole band comes in. That's a masterclass in tension building and release.
Classic. Yeah def one of their best songs. When I saw them in Tallahassee on the Lateralus tour, his voice cracked with sheer passion and emotion at that part. This was where MJK’s inspirational and emotional involvement peaked. He was all in on that Lateralus tour (saw eight shows). He was incredibly into it man, his little “spider” dances were so cool lol. He was standing on top of a screen that was projecting the videos and just fucking nuts with it.
Lateralus was peak Tool and all those shows are a Big reason that Lateralus is my favorite album of all time. It came out when I was 20 and I’ve never connected with an album as strongly as I did with that one.

H is rad but there are plenty above it imo. I’m not usually one to pick favorites tho
Yeah it’s a great song, but Eulogy, 46, Third Eye, title track and maybe even Stinkfist top it for me as far as Aenima tracks go. That said:
Without the skin
Beneath the storm
Under these tears
The walls came down
And the snake is drowned and
As I look in his eyes
My fear begins to fade
Recalling all of those times
I could have cried then
I should have cried then
And as the walls come down and
As I look in your eyes
My fear begins to fade
Recalling all of the times
I have died
And will die
It's all right
I don't mind
I don't mind
I don't mind
One of my favorite Tool moments of all time.

Tbh, Lateralus t/t seems underrated to me, at least here. It’s absolutely my favorite Tool song, but people rarely mention it here. The Grudge is probably number 2.

Reading this thread is ideal for relentless procrastination, thanks guys. Backtracking a little with some of these, but a few thoughts...
Why are people complaining about the interludes when a) there's a version of the album that doesn't include them b) choc chip is the most interesting thing here... but mainly a) due to opinions etc.
Agreed with whoever said the lack of crescendos could be seen as a problem on here due to Maynard's delivery, but that Lateralus doesn't have the same issue, it's an unfair criticism of the latter imo.
Quick hitters: The Grudge is cool, Enema is better and where's the nu-metal thing coming from? Sounds like some people want to tar these guys with a generally undesirable descriptor, one that had long since been forgotten in relation to the band.

There is a list of insults we must go through, and nu-metal is mandatory.
