well, which earlier album sounds like the black Album'? they were the first to combine thrashy riffs with a more groovy and hard rock oriented catchiness. like i said , I am not particularly fond oif it's direction. But I do acknowledge that it added something new. And the songs seem to me like being carefully crafted with that vision in mind.

yeah.. I would agree that Load and reload are rather following a trend. But for Black album? I don't think so. Actually Black Album was released before Nevermind, Pearl Jam's Ten or Soundgarden's Badmotorfinger.

Yeah I don't think you can point to any band/album and say "this inspired Metallica to make the black album". It's basically just the AJFA sound streamlined for stadiums and radio made with an infinite budget. They were sick of the long epics they'd been writing for a decade and decided to simplify things. Not much more to it than that.
