Agreed inferno, but then me neither re Shoegaze. Perhaps I just prefer dream pop (particularly the melancholy kind) to gaze and this leans more in that direction.

I reckon Loveless is pretty melancholic too, but in a livelier, and yeah, warmer, way if that makes sense.

Yeah could be melancholic but a completely different kind of melancholic. Here there is sadness and longing and a sense of something being unattainable; whereas on Loveless it's more positive, more nostalgic, sunnier, agreed!
Or something.
At least that's what they sound like to me. I imagine this could be different for many people actually.

I agree completely. Souvlaki is slower, colder, more contemplative, whereas Loveless is more... idk, emotional, chaotic. Like it's using warmth and noise as a way to distract itself from its own sadness.
Bit of a wanky description but it's the only way I can think of to describe it rn

Yes I think we're on the exact same page then, haha! So difficult to describe, but I think we feel the same way about it.

Interesting, I can see that. Part of my brain hears those noisier guitars and I think it takes me away from the place I want to be, it conflicts with the melancholy, that introspective head-space is easier when the instrumentals are less assertive and more calming, sparse, when they drift etc.
I get that feeling from Souvlaki, less so from Loveless. I guess it’s hard to quantify, so hopefully this makes sense.
How do you guys feel about Ride’s debut?

Yeah I get that Demon, for me it totally works and I cannot ever get enough of it ever, but it's a bit of a weirdo in that sense. The noise for me makes me go to that relaxed and hazy place immediately.
Ride's debut was very sharp if I remember correctly, I think I didn't really like it but I've heard it only a couple of times, a loooooonng time ago. I remember the noise here made me go far away from that nice place very quickly, but it's high time I revisited Ride.

Good advice
"How do you guys feel about Ride’s debut?"
Nowhere always struck me a bit too hard rock for my liking. I never really gave it much of a chance though, I was basically looking for another Souvlaki in it.

If you approach it expecting Souvlaki then yeah it’s gonna be a massive disappointment. Totally different vibe/purpose for me. The vox aren’t the best, but the instrumentals have started hooking me. Interesting journey.

Oh yeah... I remember now... This was why I didn't like it!
It's all coming back to me!

Yeah it's disappointing the vox don't live up to the instrumentals. Nevertheless I gave an album with brit-pop vibes an almost unprecedented 3.5, so I'm happy claiming that as a win of sorts.

I should give it another look. It wasn't the vibe I was looking for then but I remember basically enjoying it. My impression was that a lot of 90s shoegaze is more in that brit-pop vein so I didn't dive much into it.
