"What's weird about them?"
This vocal style isn't what I'd expect of hardcore. I'd have to really listen to this to dig it and since it's not traditional metal/hardcore I really doubt I'll make the effort.

'it's not traditional metal/hardcore I really doubt I'll make the effort.'
Yeah, you're right it's better... although this is my least favourite Converge (out of the ones I've heard).
Maybe try 'All We Love...' probably more accessible than this production wise & the vocals aren't as brutal as 'Jane Doe' although the latter is basically a masterpiece.
I really need to hear the redux of this.

Brewtality, do what you will, but skipping on these guys because of their vocals and unorthodox style you may be doing yourself a disservice. I agree with Sunlight, maybe check out AWLWLB.
Get on that redux ASAP, Sunlight.

I think Axe To Fall is probably the better starting point, but AWLWLB is fantastic too. That was my first converge.

The only hardcore bands I've really listened to have been Verse, Terror, Bane, Sick of it All, and if you consider Comeback Kid hardcore (they're not far off but more punk). Converge and Dillinger I just haven't been able to get into.

Lol, dude. Botch, they have 2 lp's and an ep that all rule. Listen to either We Are The Romans or An Anthology Of Dead Ends first.

So, if I've never listened to this album, should I listen to the original or the redux first? Like is the redux just a reproduced/remastered version, or are there huge differences that would make it better to listen to the original first?

Nah, just remastered with an extra track. I don't think it matters one way or another, but I'd recommend the redux.
I just started listening to Isis and played the remasters first. Imo, if a band cares enough to remaster an album, they are putting it out there for you the way they want it to sound and that's the better representation of their intentions.... If that makes any sense.

Thanks for the info. I'll probably check the redux then. I usually check the remaster of albums, because it usually sounds better. Like you said, the remaster is usually what they intended it to sound like, but didn't/couldn't at the time.

That was exactly the case for you fail me, iirc they said the original mastering was rushed back in the day and ballou didn't get to shape it quite the way he wanted. The redux sounds like a perfect middle ground between jane doe and no heroes as far as production goes

Yeah, it's great. I'm one of a few that never really noticed any issues with production (YFM got me into Converge when it came out.)
But, upon hearing the redux, I would recommend it ahead of the original anyday even if I don't hear a massive difference. It's more clean in a way that doesn't fuck with their style. Everything pops and the album benefits as a result.
