I didn't agree to anything. It's been cold and dark around my way, so this thing's mood fits perfectly.

"The rating has plummeted pretty much everywhere"

82 user score on AOTY (only 3 below Preacher's Daughter) and highest average on RYM of literally any of her projects

@clem: ask the flaming lips that, they put out a 24 hour song and called it an EP

In the internet age I’d say “EP” has been more or less generalized as a release not intended to be taken as part of the “canon” discography of the artist. Meaning generally less press, no tour, etc.

In this case it’s mostly just that Anhedönia doesn’t intend this to be taken as the follow-up to Preacher’s Daughter. Yeah it’s a little silly to call it an EP regardless but it’s the label we have that most accurately describes how she wants it to be perceived or engaged with by her audience.

That's a great framing, Boney.

Perverts feels like a "canon" release, but she's couching things a bit with the EP labelling likely to offset just how hard of an aesthetic pivot it is so if someone is scanning her catalog, it likely won't be someone's starting point and they have the expectation that this isn't a typical Ethel release.

Yeah but then you have EPs like Jar of Flies and Broken, which are some of those bands best work.

I kinda agree with what you’re saying but there’s more than a few notable exceptions

Odal, this is definitely a well-crafted and considered work rather than a toss-off, but like her earlier EPs it's literally not "canon" in the sense that it's not part of the Ethel Cain story of which Preacher's Daughter was the first and currently still only release.

Wildcard certainly there are exceptions but as I said I'm thinking of the more modern conception, in which the distinction between an EP and LP is essentially completely arbitrary when physical media is no longer the dominant form of consumption. Also, interestingly, the ones you mention are both 90s releases and (while I don't exactly have concrete evidence to back this up) I feel like that, along with the 80s to a somewhat lesser extent, was peak of the EP as a distinct and popular form (probably having to do with its being allowed to expand beyond what you could do simply with a vinyl EP and the shift to cassettes/CDs making them easier to consume).

Bring me the horizon have made a long EP before. Oddly enough it is reminiscent of this EP, while being a completely different genre. The ideas feel kind of scattered and feels very esoteric. It's not the kind of stuff the artist usually makes, and is kind of a weird anomaly/fever dream that diehards will probably be into it regardless of what style it is, but is probably a bit too out there for the casual listener.

Tundra whats your obsession with comparing literally every album ever made to BMTH.

One of the few times it’s actually comparable but I refuse to listen to an “experimental” 90 min BMTH project with a whopping 1.9 avg

Enjoyed this very much and agree with most all of the sentiments in the review. I’m finding that it rewards repeat listens, finding new things to appreciate each time

Really need to dive into more of her material

That 1.9 average is ridiculous tbh just ignore it Wildcard lol then again one of my all time favorite albums had a 1.9 until a while back when it went up to a 2

the 1.9 avg is both entirely deserved and part of the appeal. no reason at all to listen to that EP for anything but masochistic meme potential — if you can apologise for that shit, you can apologise for anything

I was so hype for another BMTH release off the heels of amo, maybe my favorite of theirs.....

But, nope. Can't do it. It's an affront to taste and not even in an interesting way.
