Endsong is excellent and really makes the entire album worth persevering with, even through its weaker parts. So maybe I should just cut out the middle man. But then would it work as well without the wider context / in isolation? I'm gonna say hell no

I sort of agree but I still think it wouldn’t work well for a lot of albums.

I prefer a ranked/rated because you can see which of the S Tier songs I like the most etc and I don’t compromise by possibly dropping them a ranking to emphasise that ranking despite their quality being extremely similar.

‘ Endsong is excellent and really makes the entire album worth persevering with, even through its weaker parts.’

With albums you need the leads and you actually want some songs to be the supporting cast.

I think ‘the support’ do a great job here.

I do have to wonder how Smith farted out wastewater like WILD MOOD SWINGS or 4:13 DREAM if he still had something like this in him.

Some might say the same about Bowie vis-a-vis BLACKSTAR and things like NEVER LET ME DOWN or HOURS. But I attribute Bowie's slump(s) more toward trying to predict the curve and briefly succumbing to the idea that he should be pandering to the latest trends. (A fugue state of which he thankfully burst out.) The Cure, on the other hand, always seemed to be doing their own thing.

To me it appears that on Wild Mood Swings or 4:13 Dream Smith believed to have the same pop sensibility he had around The Head On The Door or Kiss Me…, but he just didn’t. And he can’t seem to write angry/frustrated songs he did on Pornography or Faith either, that’s why their S/T turned out to be a dud. Introspective melancholy is his territory, the beauty of letting it go.

I recently went back to revisit Wild Mood Swings for the first time in years, and I can report back that it is indeed still abysmal

Nah, Want or Jupiter Crash are really good ones. S-tier? Depends on your definition.

there's like 2-3 good songs on it yeah, but the album sucks massively

4:13 Dream doesn't deserve the same treatment as Mood Swings or the dreadful s/t record — honestly not that much of a step down from Wish for saccharine pop Cure (certainly a similarly low floor), its greatest crime is sounding inessential

I honestly never even gave 4:13 Dream a chance, I heard the singles and was like "NOPE". S/T is underrated but maybe I'm just biased because it was the first Cure album I bought with my own money

as a general whistlestop, Seventeen Secs -> Head on the Door -> Disintegration

for this album specifically maybe sub one of the first two out for Wish, has more roots there than in their 80s goth stuff

If this was released after disintegration I think people would be like “oh hell yeah”. Don’t think I’ve ever seen a band do this 30+ years on
